What is Burniture?
We are part of a growing collective called Burniture.
Our aim is to reduce waste in the furniture industry by diverting materials from waste streams towards a new life.
‘Our lives don’t need more things, things need to be given more lives’
Georgia Gibson
Below are a few examples of pieces of Burniture.
The First Pieces of Pewspiracy
These benches were Church pews in their past life. We dismantled the pews into components parts. The seat was cut into thin 6mm strips then laminated around a form creating a semi-circular seats that fits perfectly around the accompanying circular table.
From this, an ongoing project emerged. Burniture realised that many churches were unsustainably disposing of their old pews. We did some investigation and Pewspiracy was born.
Pewspiracy is on a mission to find out where they are all being sent, and resurrect as many pews as we can to give them a second life . This is the first piece of the Pewspsiracy Collection.
From straight to semi-circular this is the story of a pair of reincarnating pews.
The Burniture Rocking Chair
We collected these deckchairs from a couple moving house on our first ever trip around West London. Our design process began by dismantling them into their component pieces. We wanted to bring out the pivoting joints and the arc along the back. Simplifying our source materials plays a fundamental part in our creative reconstruction. Turning a summer speciality into one fit for all seasons, we showed that garden furniture doesn’t have to be exclusively exterior. We call it the chairing economy.
Rohan’s Reading Chairs
The source materials for this piece came from an unwanted oak table from Maida Vale and shelves from Shepherd’s Bush. The design was inspired by Gerrit Rietveld and tongue in cheek take on flat pack furniture. These chairs are easily dismantled and reconstructed so they can be taken to
the beach, to a festival, by a fire, or wherever you see fit. Lumbar and leg support is also a key (and crowd favourite) feature of what is quickly becoming one of our signature pieces.
